The mysterious fortress island of Pampus has great appeal to anyone who has seen or read anything about it. A visit is highly recommended. If you sail there in an original lemsteraak together with your colleagues, it will be entirely an experience. Hoist the sails, off to Pampus for an unforgettable corporate outing!
Off Amsterdam, about 3 kilometers above Muiden, once lay the sandbar Het Pampus. The VOC’s heavily laden ships returning from “The East” with their riches had to wait there for the tide before they could sail to the capital. Hence the expression “lying in front of Pampus.
From 1887 to 1895, the fortress island of Pampus was built on the sandbar. It had to guard the entrance to Amsterdam across the then Zuiderzee. From Pampus alone, no shot was ever fired. Over the years, the island fell into disrepair; what remained was a maze of corridors and halls. But in 1991, Pampus became open to the public again. Now you can learn all about the island’s history there. And sailing there delightfully, too.
